Natural Sleep Aid Mosaic Weighted Blankets® May Ease Adult and Teen Sleep Disorders

March 26, 2015 2 min read

Poor sleep habits plague many of us; 40% of adults say they have occasional insomnia. We go to bed too late, have caffeine or alcohol at night, interrupting natural sleep patterns, or we overstimulate our minds with late night TV and electronic devices. Combine those bad habits with the stress of work and family, and many of us find ourselves out of sync, unable to relax and fall asleep.

Laura LeMond, founder of Mosaic Weighted Blankets® says, "As recently as 60 years ago, our ancestors went to sleep at night with no electronics, or even light. Our bodies and minds had been following a 'lights out' bedtime biology for 100,000 years or more. Now modern electronics have, in some ways, taken over our biological, intellectual and emotional systems. Studies have actually shown that all of our glowing screens interfere with sleep. If you think about it, our 'lights on' culture is quite a change for our physical bodies."

LeMond started her company in 2011 to address her own sleep issues, marketing a weighted quilted blanket (think of a bean bag in blanket form). Her weighted blankets have been a popular item for teens and adults with sensory processing disorders, sleep disorders, fibromyalgia and restless legs syndrome. She has received hundreds of testimonials about the benefits of the blankets in reducing anxiety and inducing sleep.

"These blankets work by providing input to the deep pressure touch receptors throughout the body," says Karen Moore, OTR/L, an occupational therapist. "Deep pressure touch helps the body relax. Like a firm hug, weighted blankets help us feel secure, grounded, and safe." (Source: Psychology Today). Scientific evidence has shown that moderate pressure increases levels of serotonin and melatonin in the brain - both of which are great for sleep.

LeMond recommends dimming the lights 3 hours prior to bedtime, perhaps reading in bed. At bedtime, ensure you have no outside light (not even the electronic light on the clock). Hit the sheets with a weighted blanket for six weeks with this "no light" environment and let your body rhythms get re-established.

LeMond hasn't had a single returned blanket relating to sleep issues. She shares with a smile, "It's better to get addicted to your weighted blanket – and some of my customers really have – than to get addicted to alcohol or to a little blue pill."

Are weighted blankets expensive? LeMond says, "They are hand sewn and custom made to fit a person's height, weight and particular fabric selection. They start at $129, but it isn't as expensive as a monthly drug prescription, and it's natural with no side-effects. It really has been a miracle for many people. Most of my customers view it as a great investment - hard to put a price on a good night's sleep."
