Can A Weighted Blanket Be Too Heavy

A weighted blanket may feel unpleasant if it is too heavy, but you may not feel the full effects if it is too light. While it’s typically a safe bet to adhere to the 10% rule, plus or minus a pound or two, everyone is different.

According to one study, some adults may enjoy the feeling of blankets weighing up to 30 pounds. Others, however, may want something lighter than 10% of their body weight. If you feel that your blanket is not the correct weight, please review our return and exchange policies. We’ll work with you to get you the weighted blanket you need!

What Size Weighted Blanket Do You Need

When buying a weighted blanket, you can buy it to fit the length of your body or buy it to fit your bed. It really comes down to personal preference. If you want one to fit your body length exactly, you will want to purchase our twin size weighted blanket. If you want the weighted blanket to fit the bed, you can buy our Full/Queen/King size. Either way, the weighted blanket can provide numerous benefits if the weight is correct.

Mosaic Weighted Blankets are designed to lay on top of the bed, or match your body size, not hang over the sides. If it hangs over the sides of your bed, gravity will pull the blanket to the floor.

How To Buy a Weighted Blanket for A Child

For children, you may want to add 1-2 lbs to 10% of their body weight. Some kids like the extra pressure when trying to sleep, but others may become uncomfortable if the blanket is too large or heavy.

We sell kids weighted blankets specifically designed to fit small children,  and our throw size weighted blankets are perfect for a larger child. While you can buy a larger size to allow your child to grow into their blanket, you should still adhere to the general weight guidelines of how much they weigh now.

We also suggest consulting with your doctor, occupational therapist, or another health care professional before purchasing a weighted blanket for a young child, especially if they are under the age of four.

You should never use a weighted blanket for a child less than two years old.

How to Choose Your Weighted Blanket Fabric

There are more options than just color and weight when it comes to our blankets. In addition to a variety of patterns, our blankets come in different fabrics to suit your needs.

  • If you want a crisp, cool blanket -Cotton is for you! The fabric is 100% cotton and breathable. The weighted portion of the blanket (pellets) will acclimate to the temperature of the room, so if the room is cool the blanket will be cool. You will never be too hot at night with our cotton weighted blanket.
If you really want to stay cool, check out our cooling weighted blanket! We carry a patented cooling fabric called Cool Max, designed with hot sleepers like you in mind.
  • If you want a warm, soft plush fabric -Minky fabric is for you! We carry Minky blankets that are 100% polyester and very soft to the touch, making them perfect for cuddling up. These blankets are hotter to keep you warm at night!
  • For Hospitals/Institutions -Our line of Antimicrobial fabrics are perfect for comfortable, durable use that can withstand multiple launderings.

Choosing a Washable Weighted Blanket

This is so important, especially when buying a weighted blanket for children. You want to make sure the blanket you choose has the easiest care instructions. Imagine adding water weight to the existing weight of your blanket as you try to wash it by hand. Let’s just say washing a weighted blanket can be a potential nightmare.

That’s why we make our blankets 100% machine washable! Our fabrics are extremely durable, easily withstanding multiple cleanings when washed in cool water and air dries. The blanket can also be put in the dryer on low heat for a short time and spot treated.

Please Note: For blankets over 12 lbs, a commercial washer/dryer is recommended. Do not dry clean or microwave.

Why Buy A “Weighted” Blanket

Most blankets are cozy, warm, and offer at least a cursory feeling of security. But weighted blankets go much further and deeper, providing a form of therapy known as deep pressure stimulation. Many studies have shown that this gentle, constant form of pressure can help with a wide variety of discomforts and conditions, and induce a general feeling of peace.

Read about the numerous  benefits of weighted blankets for a more in-depth look at how a weighted blanket can help you.

Once you’ve decided to give weighted a go, the next step is selecting the right one.

How Heavy Should Your Weighted Blanket Be

We recommend a blanket that is 10% of your body weight. You can also add 1 or 2 extra pounds of weight for additional pressure depending on what kind of benefits you’re hoping to gain, and why you are purchasing the blanket. For instance, a casual weighted blanket user will likely want to go with 10%, but someone suffering from stress and anxiety may opt for those couple extra pounds.

For a larger or shared blanket, we recommend a 20 - 25 pound King or Queen size.
